Job Summary
This role is for a Research Associate specializing in Natural Language Processing (NLP) within the Central Language Service of the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) in Wiesbaden. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in enhancing and automating translation and interpreting processes, particularly for international criminal police correspondence. Day-to-day tasks involve researching, evaluating, and optimizing new language technology and AI approaches, with a focus on text-based applications. This includes integrating new solutions compatible with the BKA's IT infrastructure, collaborating with other language services, and training colleagues on CAT tools and terminology databases. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply advanced NLP skills in a high-impact public service environment, contributing to critical law enforcement operations.
Required Skills
Education
Completed scientific university degree (Diplom, Master, or Magister) in Language Technology/Computer Linguistics with a focus on Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, or a comparable scientific university degree in Information Technology.
Experience
- Professional experience in language technology, computer linguistics, NLP, machine learning, and deep learning (text-focused)
- Experience with relevant programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Python, TensorFlow)
- Readiness to learn new language processing and machine translation systems
- Strong communication skills for presenting complex technical information to non-technical audiences
