Job Summary

This critical role seeks an Application Scientist and Facility Head to establish and lead the new Lentiviral Core Facility at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB). The successful candidate will drive the innovative use of lentivirus platforms, providing essential services for gene editing, transfer, and large-scale genetic screening to the institute's scientific community. Key responsibilities include modifying and developing vectors (cDNA, CRISPR-Cas9), maintaining cell lines and CRISPR libraries, producing lentivirus particles, and collaborating with the Next Generation Sequencing facility on protocol development. The Facility Head acts as the primary user contact, managing project strategy discussions and troubleshooting, while overseeing one technician. Success requires a high level of initiative, flexibility, strong problem-solving abilities, and strict adherence to S2 biosafety requirements and gene technology guidelines. A PhD in a relevant scientific field and fluency in both English and German are mandatory prerequisites for this challenging and varied position.

Required Skills

Education

PhD in a relevant scientific field (e. g., molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry or related disciplines)

Experience

  • Proven expertise and experience in molecular biology techniques
  • Track record of troubleshooting complex experiments
  • Inclination to set up the administrative framework necessary for running an efficient service operation
  • Ideally some experience in managing personnel
  • Experience with Lentivirus S2-based work (Advantageous)
