Job Summary

This leadership role involves building, leading, and strategically developing the new Scientific Computing Infrastructure team at the Fraunhofer IOSB in Karlsruhe. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and operating a future-proof, institute-wide AI and Scientific Computing infrastructure, ensuring high-performance, needs-based access to HPC and AI compute resources for scientific departments. Key responsibilities include developing a long-term strategy plan, managing budgets and investment decisions, and evaluating new technology trends in AI hardware and software stacks. The role requires deep expertise in scalable GPU clusters, high-bandwidth storage systems, network architectures for data-intensive research, and close collaboration with scientific teams to translate research needs into robust infrastructure solutions. This position is central to enhancing the institute's scientific performance and technological foundation for data-intensive AI research.

Required Skills

Education

Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or comparable field

Experience

  • Several years of experience in the operation or management of HPC or AI compute infrastructures
  • Experience in scientific or research-related environments (ideally)
  • Experience in the technical and disciplinary leadership of technical teams
  • Fundamental understanding of AI workloads, GPU computing, and distributed training
