Job Summary

The Senckenberg Institute for Plant Form and Function (SIP) in Jena is seeking a Junior Group Leader in Digital Collectomics to spearhead the development of modern technologies for collection-based research, with a specific focus on herbaria. This role involves exploring, developing, and implementing methods for collection digitization, automated information extraction and analysis from collection material using AI/ML and 2D/3D imaging. The successful candidate will be responsible for conceptualizing and integrating databases, maintaining plant and herbarium-related databases, and fostering collaborations across Senckenberg institutes and international networks. They will also contribute to teaching at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and help shape the profile of the new Senckenberg Institute. This is an attractive opportunity for an internationally recognized scientist to lead a dedicated team and pursue advancements towards a professorship.

Required Skills

Education

Doctoral degree in Computer Science or Natural Science (preferably Biology with proven expertise in Computer Science or computer vision methods)

Experience

  • Professional experience in developing and implementing methods in digitization, AI, ML, and/or 2D/3D imaging for biodiversity research
  • Experience in the acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects
  • Experience in guiding students, staff, or workgroups
