Job Summary

The Technical University Ilmenau is seeking highly motivated Doctoral Candidates to join the Institute for Process Measurement and Sensor Technology (IPMS). This is a unique, three-year fixed-term position focused on developing a globally unprecedented Nanopositioning machine designed for ultra-precise measurement and structuring of large optical components (up to 1m x 1m). Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting fundamental research in Nanopositioning Technology, implementing mechanical, optical, and electronic systems, performing metrological validation, and managing project tasks in collaboration with international partners. Successful candidates must hold a Master's degree in a relevant engineering or physics field and possess very strong English language skills. This role offers the opportunity to work at the technical limits of precision engineering and pursue personal scientific qualification (PhD) within a highly interdisciplinary and international team.

Required Skills

Education

Master's, Diploma, or equivalent university degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Optronics, Technical Cybernetics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or Physics.

Experience

  • Professional experience in fundamental research in Nanopositioning Technology
  • Practical experience in implementing mechanical, optical, and electronic systems
  • Experience in metrological validation processes
  • Experience in project management, both internally and in collaboration with external project partners

Additional

  • The position is designated for the promotion of personal scientific qualification (pursuing a PhD) in accordance with the German Fixed-Term Scientific Employment Contracts Act (§ 2 Abs. 1 Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz). The contract is fixed-term for three years. The role is not suitable for part-time employment.
