Job Summary
The Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel is seeking a dedicated Research Associate to join the Marine Evolutionary Biology Group (AG Roth) for an indefinite, full-time position (TV-L E14). This role centers on conducting independent, experimental basic research into the evolution of reproductive strategies in marine fish, specifically focusing on pipefish and seahorses (Syngnathids). Day-to-day responsibilities include integrating aspects of reproductive biology, developmental biology, immunology, and ecology, supported by aquarium experiments, transcriptomics, genomics, and EvoDevo techniques. The successful candidate will be expected to significantly shape the research focus, secure third-party funding, and demonstrate expertise through high-ranking international publications. Additionally, the role involves administrative support for group planning (e.g., animal husbandry, genetic safety, animal testing applications), and teaching responsibilities in German for Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, specifically in Zoology and Data Analysis/Statistics. Fluency in both German and English is required, as English is the working language of the research group.
Required Skills
Education
Master (M.Sc.) and Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Evolutionary Biology/Zoology
Experience
- Professional experience in empirical evolutionary biological research
- Experience in applying for third-party funding with independent scientific focus
- Experience in planning, construction, and maintenance of recirculating seawater aquarium systems
- Experience in the German-language teaching (Zoology, Statistics & Data Analysis)
- Experience in the supervision of students (Bachelor, Master, PhD)
- Experience in the communication with authorities regarding genetic engineering and animal welfare
- Experience with international scientific collaborations demonstrated by high-ranking publications
- Experience in field work in aquatic habitats

- Driver's license (Class B); Research focus must be on the immune system, evolutionary and developmental biology of Syngnathids; Must be involved in communication with relevant authorities regarding animal testing applications and genetic safety.
