Job Summary

This leadership role at Bayer’s largest Pharma API production site in Bergkamen focuses on directing the laboratory and GMP operations team within the Cluster Microbiology, which utilizes biocatalysis to produce active ingredients. The Head of Upstream Processes will be a key member of the plant leadership team, responsible for optimizing both new and established production processes with a strong emphasis on cost efficiency and quality assurance. Day-to-day activities involve leading and coaching the team, managing lab-scale transfers, and scaling up new processes to pilot and production levels. Furthermore, the role oversees an analytical shift laboratory and manages environmental microbiological monitoring across the site, ensuring rigorous compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and HSE standards. Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (ideally a PhD) in biochemistry, microbiology, or biotechnology, coupled with extensive pharmaceutical industry experience in biotechnological process industrialization.
