Job Summary

This PhD research position focuses on developing and validating secure Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods specifically tailored for maritime propulsion systems utilizing alternative fuels like methanol. The core objective is to significantly contribute to the decarbonization of shipping by enhancing operational flexibility and reducing emissions, aligning with IMO goals. Day-to-day activities involve optimizing engine operation through AI analysis of operating data, dynamically adapting combustion and propulsion strategies to varying fuel properties, modeling and simulating numerous operational scenarios, and ensuring system safety within physical and mechanical limits. Successful candidates must hold a very strong Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, possess deep knowledge of Machine Learning, and be proficient in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C/C++. The role requires high motivation to work collaboratively in an international, interdisciplinary team, culminating in validation tests on real engines in cooperation with a university and test facility.
