Job Summary
The GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is seeking an experienced Ship Coordinator to manage and organize the technical operations and research expeditions for their fleet, including the FS ALKOR, FK LITTORINA, and the upcoming FS METEOR IV (starting 2026). This pivotal role involves proactive coordination with internal scientific teams, administration, funding organizations, shipping companies, and shipyards. The coordinator will be responsible for overseeing budgets, schedules, and quality standards related to ship operations, managing ship time allocation, and representing GEOMAR's interests in relevant national and international committees. The ideal candidate holds a university degree in marine natural or engineering sciences and possesses proven experience in planning, executing, and prioritizing scientific sea expeditions, ensuring smooth and transparent decision-making for deployment requests. This is a full-time, permanent position classified at EG14.
Required Skills
Education
University degree, preferably in marine natural sciences or engineering sciences
Experience
- Participation in ship expeditions
- Experience with the entire cycle of scientific expeditions (planning, application, preparation, execution, follow-up)
- Experience in committee work for representing organizational interests in national or international bodies
- Experience in preparing reports and applications in German and English (Desirable)
- Experience with budget responsibility (Desirable)
- Experience in conducting tender and bidding procedures (Desirable)

Additional
- Involvement in the scientific support group for the new FS METEOR IV construction and specific obligations related to the ship's testing phase.
