Job Summary
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is seeking a Scientific Officer to join the 'Atmospheric Radioactivity and Trace Analysis' division. This critical role involves the scientific management and advancement of sampling and measurement technology, specifically focusing on monitoring atmospheric radioactivity for emergency preparedness and verifying the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Day-to-day responsibilities include ensuring high data availability and integrity, evaluating and summarizing radionuclide data from international monitoring networks (like CTBTO’s IMS), and conceptualizing scientific IT systems for automated data processing and integration into BfS's alerting concepts. The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, or Environmental Engineering, possesses strong scripting skills (Shell, SQL, Python) in LINUX/Windows environments, and has professional experience in complex systems for measuring radioactive substances in the environment. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to national and international safety, working in a scientifically advanced federal authority in Freiburg, Germany.
Required Skills
Education
University Degree (Diplom or Master) in Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or comparable field; Specialist knowledge and competence in Radiation Protection (or willingness to obtain it promptly)
Experience
- Professional experience in the conception, further development, and maintenance of complex systems for sampling and measuring radioactive substances in the environment
- Professional experience working in a process-oriented and standard-compliant environment
- Experience with on-call duties and exercises related to radiological emergency response
