Job Summary
This is a senior leadership role overseeing the planning and execution of new construction and renovation projects for municipal buildings in Kiel, including administrative offices, fire/rescue stations, and cultural buildings (e.g., concert halls, theaters). The Head of Department acts as the client representative, providing project leadership and steering for major urban developments, often collaborating with external architects. Key responsibilities include defining departmental strategies, managing a team of 12-14 architects and construction specialists, coordinating workflows, and ensuring economic efficiency. The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Architecture or Civil Engineering, possesses significant professional and leadership experience in complex building projects (HOAI phases 1-9), and has expertise in public procurement law. This position offers the opportunity to shape Kiel's urban landscape through high-profile, long-term construction initiatives.
Required Skills
Education
Master's degree (or equivalent, minimum 8 semesters) in Architecture or Civil Engineering; or eligibility for the second entry level of career group two, technical services branch, with the aforementioned degree. Must possess building permit authorization as a member of a German State Chamber of Architects and Engineers, with willingness to join the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of relevant professional experience based on required education
- Leadership experience required
- Experience in project leadership and steering
- Experience as a design architect for prominent projects (HOAI phases 1-9)
- Experience in competition procedures (GRW)
