Job Summary

Join the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe (SMNK) as a Technical Assistant for the State Biodiversity Repository within the Entomology Department. This is a full-time, permanent position focused on managing and processing extensive insect and arthropod collections, particularly those related to statewide insect monitoring in Baden-Württemberg. Key responsibilities include comprehensive collection management, such as inventory, digitization, database management (e.g., Diversity Workbench), and specimen loan traffic. The role involves hands-on laboratory work, including sorting arthropods under a binocular microscope, preparing dry collection specimens, and performing molecular lab tasks like DNA extraction, amplification, and potentially DNA (Meta)Barcoding. The ideal candidate holds a technical assistant qualification or a B.A. in a natural science discipline with a focus on entomology, possesses advanced knowledge in arthropod taxonomy, and is proficient in both German and English.

Required Skills

Education

Completed state-recognized training as a Biological or Laboratory Technical Assistant, Preparator, or equivalent qualifications/experience, OR a completed (specialized) university degree (B.A.) in a natural science discipline with a focus on Entomology.

Experience

  • Professional experience in collection management or research institutes (natural history museums/research institutes)
  • Experience handling collection databases (e.g., Diversity Workbench)
  • Experience handling hazardous substances and facilities (advantageous)
  • Willingness to participate in field work (advantageous)
