Job Summary

This crucial role involves leading the central Data Engineering team within the Societal Observatory Using Novel Data Sources (SOUNDS) project at Saarland University. SOUNDS is an interdisciplinary research initiative leveraging innovative data sources like satellite imagery and social media to study societal transformation. The Team Lead is responsible for the setup, strategic development, and operational management of the Data Development Pool, overseeing a team of three Data Engineering specialists. Key responsibilities include technical leadership, task prioritization, representing the team in interdisciplinary project meetings, and collaborating closely with scientists to translate requirements into technical solutions. A major focus is ensuring compliance with data protection laws, maintaining high data quality, and strategically designing the overall data architecture, pipelines, and tools (including Data Lakes and Streaming Technologies). Candidates must hold a Master's degree in a relevant technical field and possess significant professional experience in Data Engineering and Cloud Architectures, alongside fluency in both German and English.

Required Skills

Education

Completed university degree (Master's/Diploma) in Computer Science, Data Science, Computational Social Science, or comparable qualification. Doctorate (PhD) is beneficial.

Experience

  • Experience in leading projects or teams
  • Several years of professional experience in Data Engineering, Big Data, Cloud Architectures, processing large, heterogeneous data volumes, or Software Development

Additional

  • Fixed-term contract until July 15, 2032, with the option for extension. Must demonstrate interest in interdisciplinary issues and socially relevant research applications. Foreign university degrees require proof of equivalence (ZAB) prior to employment.
