Job Summary

The Federal Institute for Hydrology (BfG) is seeking a Scientific Researcher to join the 'Vegetation Science and Landscape Management' division in Koblenz. This permanent position focuses on ecological (habitat) modeling and the advanced management of ecological data. Key responsibilities include acting as the internal and external contact point for ecological data management, developing and refining open-source ecological models (rule-based, statistical, process-based) to forecast habitat changes, particularly concerning vegetation. The role requires coordinating the maintenance of biological data according to FAIR principles and Open Data standards, and coordinating the analysis of biological, morphological, climatic, and hydrological datasets for scientific and monitoring projects. Candidates must possess a Master's degree in a relevant scientific field and strong programming skills in R, Python, and SQL, along with expertise in database and GIS applications.

Required Skills

Education

Completed scientific university degree (Master or equivalent) in Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Geo-/Environmental Sciences, or comparable qualification.

Experience

  • Professional experience in management, analysis, and modeling of ecological data (e.g., habitat states and changes) (Desired)
  • Professional experience in setting up and applying databases and Geoinformation Systems (Desired)
  • Experience in developing management-relevant foundations, presentations, and publications, especially for political consulting (Desired)
