Job Summary

The Head of Data Technologies will strategically and operationally lead the Data Technologies division within the Ocean Research Technology Centre (ORTC) at GEOMAR, an internationally leading marine research institution. This crucial leadership role involves managing four teams totaling 25 employees, prioritizing objectives, and organizing team collaboration to support ocean research through digital technologies. Key responsibilities include advancing requirements for Artificial Intelligence, information and data services, and sustainable infrastructural software development in dialogue with GEOMAR's four research departments. The successful candidate will also be responsible for acquiring and coordinating national and international data infrastructure projects, representing GEOMAR in initiatives like the Helmholtz Earth and Environment DataHub, and contributing to the ORTC leadership team. Candidates must possess a university degree in Computer Science or Natural Science, extensive leadership experience, and proven expertise in managing AI, data science, and data infrastructure projects.

Required Skills

Education

Completed scientific university degree in Computer Science or Natural Science (Master, Diploma, or comparable qualification)

Experience

  • Several years of leadership experience
  • Experience in strategy development
  • Several years of experience in planning and executing projects in AI, data science, or data and information infrastructure
  • Experience in collaborating with other research institutions or companies
  • Experience in applying for national and international research funding projects
  • Knowledge of generating data products based on federated systems
