Job Summary

This position offers a highly focused opportunity for a PhD student in Physics or a comparable natural science to contribute to cutting-edge metrology research at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Berlin-Adlershof. The role involves developing advanced X-ray spectrometric methods, particularly X-ray fluorescence analysis, using the BESSY II storage ring. Day-to-day tasks include independent planning and execution of experiments, refining instrumentation, analyzing complex measurement data, and quantifying metrological uncertainties. The successful candidate will apply these methods to critical questions in metrology and material research, culminating in the presentation and publication of scientific results. This is an attractive, three-year, part-time position (33.15 hours/week) within a leading international research institution, offering direct PhD supervision and the chance to concentrate fully on research without teaching duties.

Required Skills

Education

University degree (Diploma/Master's) in Physics or a comparable natural science with a 'very good' grade

Experience

  • Professional experience in Synchrotron Radiation, X-ray Spectroscopy, Atomic and Molecular Physics, Nanotechnology, or Electrochemistry
  • Ability to conduct and interpret complex experiments
